The United Nations General Assembly approved, in the December session, the creation of the International Day of the Mediterranean Diet, to be celebrated annually on November 16, recognizing its importance for health, the environment and culture.
According to CCDR Algarve “the recognition now granted by the UN, presented by the representation of Italy, with the support of Portugal, represents a relevant milestone for Mediterranean countries and regions”, following the classification of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The entity also recalls that “in the Algarve, actions were developed to structure the territory’s identity, its ways of life and the qualification of the region’s cultural, tourist, agri-food and gastronomic offer”.
According to the United Nations resolution, “the Mediterranean Diet is highlighted as a balanced dietary model”, based on the consumption of “fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and olive oil”, associated with “the prevention of non-communicable diseases, well-being, longevity and nutritional diversity”.
CCDR Algarve states that “over the last decade it has maintained a permanent promotion, safeguard and appreciation of the Mediterranean Diet”, namely through the presidency of the Regional Commission for the Mediterranean Diet.
This work includes “territorial and institutional coordination initiatives, support for economic, cultural and tourist enhancement projects”, as well as the promotion of “short chains and local products”, coordination with universities, municipalities and the agricultural sector and participation in international networks.
The institution of the International Day constitutes, according to the CCDR, “an additional political reinforcement to consolidate the work carried out, reinforce Mediterranean cooperation, stimulate projects financed by the European Union” and deepen policies linked “to public health, food education, environmental sustainability and climate adaptation”.
It assures that it will “maintain and consolidate networking and monitor the implementation of this initiative promoted by FAO”, collaborating with entities at various levels to affirm the Algarve as a “qualified, competitive and culturally distinct Mediterranean hub”.
