End of Russian gas imports: Hungary will file a lawsuit for the EU regulation, Slovakia will do THIS!

Hungary will file a lawsuit at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) due to the regulation on the gradual termination of the import of Russian natural gas, which was approved on Monday at the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council in Brussels. According to the MTI agency, this was stated by the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Péter Szijjártó, reports TASR correspondent in Budapest.

The head of Hungarian diplomacy said that the ban on the purchase of Russian oil and natural gas is in sharp conflict with Hungary’s interests. “If we can’t buy oil and natural gas from Russia, it means that families’ utility bills could triple and factories could also find themselves in a difficult situation due to price increases.” he warned.

“Therefore, as soon as this decision is officially published, the Hungarian government will submit its claim to the Court of Justice, which aims to annul this legal norm of the CJEU.” dodal Szijjártó.

On Monday, the member states of the European Union definitively approved the ban on the import of Russian gas from the end of 2027 at the latest. Slovakia and Hungary voted against the approval, for which a qualified majority was sufficient.

According to the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár, this is a step that must be thoroughly evaluated in terms of its impact on energy security, competitiveness and social stability of the member states.

“We cannot accept solutions that do not reflect the real possibilities and specifics of individual countries. Therefore, we will turn to the CJEU and initiate proceedings aimed at annulling the REPower EU regulation on the ban on the import of Russian energy,” informed Blanár. He emphasized that, despite the disagreement, Slovakia remains a constructive partner in European energy policy.
