Fat Thursday is fast approaching, and various sweet pastries are appearing more and more often on the tables. If you are looking for inspiration on fluffy and this time choose those that come from Greece. Loukoumades, because that’s what we’re talking about, are simple to make, but what about their taste? It’s hard to describe in words, so you just have to try them.
They are hidden under the exotic-sounding name Loukoumades small yeast donuts soaked in honey syrup and deep-fried. They come from Greece, but their taste also delights in Cyprus and Turkey.
I brought the recipe for this sweet with me from my holidays in Greece and since then I have been making it every year during Carnival. Perfectly fluffy and sweet, they are the first to disappear from the table. Drizzled with honey and sprinkled with nuts, sesame or cinnamon not only do they taste delicious, but they also look extremely appetizing.
The form of loukoumades resembles small balls that are light, fluffy and extremely aromatic. It’s the perfect one-time snackwhich may become the star of your table during this year’s carnival. Especially that Preparing these Greek donuts is not difficult.

Loukoumades are still served today during Greek holidays, festivals and family celebrations, as well as in Greek taverns. Due to its specificity, They perfectly fit the character of Polish carnival and Fat Thursday. They can therefore be an interesting alternative to classic donuts.
To prepare you need the following list of ingredients:
- 3 cups of wheat flour
- 2 cups of warm water (or milk)
- 50 g of yeast
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- A pinch of salt
- 2 teaspoons of spirit
- Fat for frying
Icing:
- Honey syrup
- Cinnamon
- Chopped nuts
Preparation method:
- Crumble the yeast, mix them with sugar and pour warm water (or milk). Stir until dissolved and leave for 15-20 minutes.
- After some time, gradually add flour, olive oil, salt and spirit to the mixture. Mix the ingredients thoroughly so that the dough has a smooth consistency. Leave them covered to rise for about 2 hours.
- Heat the fat in a pot with a thick bottom. Place small portions of dough with a spoon into the heated fat, forming balls. Fry until golden brown. Remove onto a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- Pour honey over the fried Loukoumades, and then sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped nuts. Enjoy your meal!
