An armed attack this Sunday left at least 11 dead and 12 injured on a football field in the state of Guanajuato (center), one of the most violent in Mexico, where organized criminal groups operate.

The terrorist attack occurred on Sunday, in the city of Salamancaand authorities said they were looking for those responsible.

“He was confirmed the death of 11 peopleso far, of which ten lost their lives on site and another while receiving medical care in a hospital center”, said the authorities.

There is also a record of 12 injured by gunfire of firearms, which are currently receiving care.

Violence five months before the World Cup

On Saturday night, four bags of human remains were abandoned in the same city.

The state of Guanajuato is an industrial hub home to car assembly plants and many tourist attractions, where several organized criminal groups compete for drug trafficking and fuel theft, according to analysts.

Mexico, together with the USA and Canada, will receive the world football 2026, running from June 11th to July 19th.

Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey (with one stadium each) are the three cities that will host the competition, with Guanajuato being left out.

Although episodes of crime and violence continue to exist in high numbers in the country, at the beginning of the year, the President’s Government Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the Homicide rate in the country reached the lowest level in a decade in 2025.
