Gunmen opened fire on a football field in the city of Salamanca, in central Mexico, this Sunday, the 25th, leaving at least 11 dead and 12 injured, according to local authorities.
According to Mayor Cesar Prieto, the shooters arrived at the scene after a match and began shooting at people on the field. Ten victims died at the scene and one died later in hospital. Among the injured were a woman and a minor.
In a statement released on social media, Prieto stated that the attack is related to a “crime wave” that is hitting the municipality and asked for support from the federal government to contain the violence. The appeal was directed to president Claudia Sheinbaum.
The Guanajuato State Attorney’s Office reported that it has opened an investigation and is working together with federal authorities to reinforce security in the region.
Despite the episode, the Mexican government claims that the homicide rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, with 17.5 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. Experts, however, assess that official data may not fully reflect the level of violence in the country.
