Rain, snow and wind starting this Monday in Minho and Douro Litoral; then extends to the rest of the country. It will rain all this week, “it’s guaranteed”.
Mainland Portugal begins to feel the effects of Joseph depression, com rain, snow, wind and sea disturbancesstarting early this morning, Monday, no Minho and Douro Coastannounced IPMA.
The effects of depression Joseph will extend then, gradually, remaining regions of mainland Portugal on the night of Monday to Tuesday“and with the passage of successive frontal swells at least until the weekend”, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in a statement.
From Monday onwards, the IPMA foresees “periods of rain, persistent and sometimes forte”, which on Tuesday will become “a shower regime,” which may occasionally be hail and accompanied by thunderstorm.”
“There are no prospects in the short or medium term for significant changes to this unstable situation”, commented meteorologist Pedro Sousa, from IPMA. THE rain “it should remain for a good few days”, that is, throughout this week. “That’s guaranteed.”
Furthermore, as of Tuesday morning, “fall in neve in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela, gradually lowering the elevation to 600/800 meters in the North and Center regions and in the Serra de S. Mamede”.
O vento will blow stronger from Monday, “with gusts of up to 80 km/h [quilómetros por hora] on the west coast and up to 100 km/h in the highlands.”
IPMA also states that there are plans waves with four to five meters on the west coast, starting from Monday, which will increase, reaching a maximum height of 12 meters from Tuesday afternoon.
Due to the passage of the Joseph Depression through mainland Portugal, the districts of Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Coimbra, Faro, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real will go through phases under orange warning in the coming days.
According to IPMA, the orange warning will cover maritime unrest in 10 of these districts — the exception is Vila Real, whose orange warning, regarding precipitation, will be in force between 12:00 on Monday and 03:00 on Tuesday.
The IPMA also issued several snow warnings in the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branca, warning of possible disruption caused by snowfall with accumulation and possible ice formation, as well as rain and wind.
For Monday, the IPMA placed the districts of Braga, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real under orange warning, due to the forecast of precipitation, with almost the entire territory under yellow warning due to rain and wind in the coming days.
Or notice orange for maritime unrest will be repeated on Tuesday for the districts of Setúbal, Porto, Faro, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.
