More than 860,000 households have been left without electricity. Multiple power outages were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Freezing rain is falling across parts of Georgia, North and South Carolina, with heavy snowfall across the Ohio Valley and the Northeast.
Snow will also affect parts of New England by Monday night. Large amounts of snow are likely to fall in Boston and Albany. Hartford, Connecticut and Portland, Maine may also be affected by heavy snowfall.
Cancellation of 15,000 flights
The blizzard hitting the US has also affected air travel. Over 12,000 scheduled flights were canceled yesterday, while another 3,000 have been canceled so far today.
Weather conditions will gradually improve this week, although snow and bitter cold may persist for several more days.
“Snow and ice will melt very slowly and not disappear soon, which will hinder recovery efforts,” said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
