Are monstera leaves turning yellow? You're probably making this common mistake

January is one of the more difficult months for houseplants. Then they are exposed to stress factors, such as little sunlight, dry air and slower metabolism. If we add improper cultivation, their condition will deteriorate.

This time we take a closer look at a monstera with yellowing leaves. Why do they turn yellow? How to deal with this? You will find answers to these questions in this article.

The leaves turn yellow due to too frequent watering. In winter, the plant grows slower and uses much less water than in summer.

Excess water in the colder months is more likely to lead to overwatering and root rot. Moreover, in January the substrate dries much slower, so the roots have limited access to oxygen.

This is when the weakened plant reacts by turning its leaves yellow. They may also become soft and fall off.

Many people misinterpret the browning of the leaf tips of the specimen. They do not indicate a lack of water, but an excess of it in low sunlight.

If the monstera leaves turn yellow, then it is worth drying the substrate. So let’s water the plant only when the top layer of soil is completely dry and the pot is not so heavy (water accumulates in the base).

Why is it worth limiting watering of Monstera? This will reduce the risk of root rot. Therefore, we will improve their oxygenation. The water management of the leaves will be stabilized.

Just 2 weeks after this change, we will notice an improvement in the monstera’s condition. Its leaves will stop turning yellow and brown, they will become stiffer, and the plant’s shape will be more stable.

Before watering the monstera in January, put your finger into its pot about 5 cm. If the soil is completely dry, we water the plant.

We water it with less water than in summer, but we do it thoroughly, i.e. until the excess eggs flow out. We recommend pouring out the water from the stand after 10 minutes.

In January, water the monstera every 12-18 days depending on the location and air temperature.
