Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said in a statement to AFP that visitors should apply for the right visas and come to the country for the right reasons. “Spreading hatred is not a good reason for a visit,” the minister clarified. Canberra tightened hate crime laws in January in response to the Dec. 14 mass shooting during Hanukkah celebrations on Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
The Conservative Jewish Association, which invited Yahood as a speaker at its event, criticized the cancellation of his visa, writes AFP. “The latest (visa) cancellation reinforces the Jewish community’s concern that despite the horrors of the Bondi Beach massacre … (Prime Minister Anthony) Albanese’s government has not changed and acted with sincerity,” the association’s chief executive Robert Gregory said in a statement.
