Dog Ear

A couple from Santa Catarina filed a police report after receiving death threats after being mistaken for the parents of one of the teenagers involved in the death of their dog Orelha, in Praia Brava, in Santa Catarina.

Since the case gained prominence and repercussion across the country, profiles on social media began to associate lawyer Cynthia Ambrogini and doctor Alberto Ambrogini as responsible for one of the young people investigated for the attack on the dog.

The two, however, have no relationship with the young people accused of the crime. The couple began to receive public and private attacks and threats. Frightened by the false narrative built around their names, they approached the Civil Police of Santa Catarina to register a police report against more than 100 profiles. Profiles of teachers, businesspeople, public servants and influencers were identified.

According to the couple’s defense, carried out by lawyers Alexandre Kale and Rodrigo Duarte, most of the profiles are easy to identify because they display the full name and, in some cases, even the company where the person works.

The defense reinforces that each perpetrator of the offenses can be individually held responsible because identifying profiles is simple and technically viable.

“The false sense of impunity on the internet makes many believe that they can defame, persecute and attack innocent people without facing consequences, which does not correspond to reality. Brazilian legislation provides for civil and criminal liability for those who propagate offenses, falsely attribute crimes to third parties or participate in online persecution campaigns. The internet is not a land without law: comments, prints, IP records and interactions leave traces”, he says.

The couple emphasizes that it is disturbing to see how some people, protected by the screen, believe they have moral authorization to destroy lives in the name of supposed “justice”. In a statement, the couple’s defense says that “violence against animals must be debated in public and private spaces so that it never happens again, and not in a digital arena where everyone behaves like lions”.

“The case of the dog Orelha is sad, but above all it reflects a symptom of our society, which does not realize that punishing violence with violence turns everyone into potential aggressors and dissolves any minimum limit of civility”, he says.

The investigation

According to investigations, the dog Orelha was allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers. The case is investigated by the Civil Police and monitored by the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina (MPSC), through the 10th Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Capital, in the area of Children and Youth, and the 32nd Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Capital, in the area of the Environment.

According to the MP, Orelha suffered attacks in the head region, dying during veterinary care that sought to clinically reverse the case.

According to information from the 10th Public Prosecutor’s Office, “several people have already been interviewed, and new interviews are planned for the next few days, as the investigation progresses and the elements gathered by the police authority are consolidated.”

Two of the four teenagers suspected of torturing and killing the dog Orelha are traveling to the United States. According to the general delegate of the Civil Police of Santa Catarina, Ulisses Gabriel, the young people’s trip was pre-scheduled and they should return to Brazil next week. The defenses of those involved were not located.
