This Tuesday, Embraer received approval from the Indian government for its plan to manufacture aircraft in the Asian country, in an alliance with the Indian group Adani, to definitively enter one of the fastest growing airline industries in the world.

“By bringing this capability to India, we are decisively moving up the value chain from being primarily a market for aircraft to becoming a player in their production,” Indian Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said after signing the deal.

The document signed today is a Memorandum of Understanding that establishes the basis for negotiating the installation of a Final Assembly Line for civil aircraft in India, an industrial infrastructure that would include everything from assembly to flight testing and final delivery of the aircraft.

Although the exact model of the plane is yet to be defined, as detailed by the parties, the agreement focuses exclusively on regional transport aircraft to connect medium-sized cities.

“We believe the stars are aligning to advance the ‘Make in India’ initiative. We see a bright future ahead,” said Embraer Commercial Aviation Executive Director Arjan Meijer.

According to the executive, although the country has a fleet of 800 planes and orders for another 1,700, the regional jet segment is practically non-existent.

“To develop internally, the country needs smaller planes to truly boost GDP. This will not only bring connectivity, but economic benefits to second and third tier cities,” explained Meijer.

In turn, the director of Adani Defense, Jeet Adani, highlighted that the alliance will also “strengthen strategic relations between India and Brazil, bringing together complementary capabilities”.

Brazil and India are founding partners of the BRICS and both have been impacted by the United States government’s tariff policy.

Although Embraer already has an operational fleet of almost 50 aircraft in India in the defense and executive aviation sectors, this agreement establishes a historic milestone as it is the first time that the Brazilian manufacturer will produce passenger aircraft in the Asian country.
