Lewandowski says he stopped serving Banco Master after taking over Ministry of Justice

BRASILIA, 27 Jan (Reuters) – Former Minister of Justice Ricardo Lewandowski said this Tuesday that he stopped acting as a lawyer for Banco Master after being invited by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to take on the role in the federal government.

Lewandowski said in a statement that he was hired by Banco Master after retiring from the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in April 2023, but stopped working for businessman Daniel Vorcaro’s financial institution when he became Minister of Justice.

‘Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, after leaving the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in April 2023, returned to his legal activities. In addition to several other clients, he ‌provided legal consultancy services to Banco Master’, states the note.

‘Upon being invited by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to take over the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, in January 2024, Lewandowski withdrew from his law firm and suspended his registration with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), ceasing to act in all cases’, he added.

The leader of the Lula government in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), admitted, also in a note, that he suggested hiring Lewandowski for Master.

‘Senator Jaques Wagner was consulted about a good jurist and remembered Ricardo Lewandowski, who had just left the Federal Supreme Court. Surely, ‘the bank found the suggestion appropriate and hired him’, states the note from the parliamentarian’s advisor.
