Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he felt “a distinct change in tone” during his phone conversation with President Donald Trump on Monday, telling MPR News: “I’m going to take their word for it for now.”
During the conversation, Walz said he asked Trump to allow the Minnesota Department of Criminal Investigation to conduct an independent investigation into the deaths of Renee Good and – both US citizens shot by agents during immigration raids.
“He said he would look into it,” Walz said of Trump’s response.
The president also agreed to consider reducing the number of immigration agents in the state, the governor said.
Walz also said he intends to talk to Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, and come up with a joint plan. Homan is expected to take over immigration operations in Minnesota, as the .
“We’ve made it clear that we’re doing the right thing. We don’t want criminals here, but we also recognize that someone who comes here looking for a better life should be treated with dignity, that Americans shouldn’t fear for their lives when they leave their home just because of the color of their skin,” Walz said.
“I think Donald Trump understands this too,” he added.
