Announced this Monday (28/1) as new sports manager São Paulo, Rafinha held his first press conference in office and addressed sensitive topics at the club’s current moment, such as delayed wages and the crisis experienced on the field.
When asked about the lack of payments, Rafinha acknowledged the problem, but stated that the situation cannot be used as a justification for the athletes’ low performance.
“I’ve seen all the movement being made to settle what’s pending. But problems can’t become a crutch for the players. It can’t be a crutch for anyone. I was a champion with back pay. We won the Copa do Brasil with back pay”, he stated.

The former full-back highlighted that delays are not normal in any profession, but considered that the group needs to find the strength to react on the field.
“This is not normal, of course not. But we understand the moment. Political crisis, delayed salary… we cannot rely on that. I know how much this group can achieve. Recovery begins with victory, performance and posture. That is my job”, he added.
New role at the club
Rafinha also explained what his role will be in São Paulo’s day-to-day life. According to him, the main mission is to act as link between board, players and coaching staffin addition to shielding the internal environment so that football is the priority.
“I’m going to act as a liaison between the board, players and coaching staff. I think that’s what São Paulo needs most now. The priority is football. Doing this shielding here at CT so that the focus is on playing ball”, he explained.
