The US has again withdrawn from the Paris Agreement under Trump: the UN warns of far-reaching consequences

  • The US under Trump has officially withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement.
  • The US is no longer bound by commitments to limit global warming.
  • The decision creates a financial gap in support for poorer countries.
  • The US is the second largest producer of emissions and their move will affect global warming.

The United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, has officially withdrawn from the Paris Agreement for the second time. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency. According to the United Nations (UN), the withdrawal takes effect on Tuesday – exactly one year after Washington announced the move to the UN.

Withdrawal from the agreement was one of the key promises of the US president during the election campaign. Trump signed an executive order to withdraw on the day of his inauguration, January 20, 2025. The goal of the Paris Agreement, which unites almost all the nations of the world, is to keep the increase in the average global temperature below a critical threshold.

By withdrawing from the agreement, the United States is no longer bound by commitments to limit global warming. This decision also creates a significant funding gap, including support for climate change mitigation and adaptation, which is particularly important for poorer countries.

The United States is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world after China, which means that this decision will have far-reaching consequences, DPA points out. According to UN estimates, it could contribute to further warming by 0.1 degrees Celsius. The United States has already largely withdrawn from climate diplomacy. For example, they did not even participate in the UN climate change conference (COP30) in the Brazilian city of Belém last November.
