According to the local sheriff, CBP agents they pursued Patrick Gary Schlegel, who was suspected of human trafficking. During the pursuit in the town of Arivaca, approximately 10 miles north of the Mexican border, Schlegel fired at the agents, who then also responded by shooting. The incident in Arizona will be investigated by the FBI along with other authorities, which, according to the sheriff, emphasize transparency and restoring public confidence in the activities of law enforcement agencies.

The shooting in Arizona came at a time of heightened scrutiny of federal immigration agents after CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents fatally shot two U.S. citizens during an immigration raid in Minneapolis, Minnesota in January: a medic caring for war veterans, among others, and a mother of three. These tragedies occurred during the federal operation “Operation Metro Surge”.
