How the Challenger disaster shaped a generation 40 years ago


40 years ago, something special was on the agenda in thousands of schools in the USA: teacher Christa McAuliffe was supposed to fly into space on board the Space Shuttle Challenger. The first civilian among trained astronauts was a signal to the world: flights into space are becoming more and more normal, and now a teacher is traveling with us to explain in simple terms what happens. The event was broadcast on television on January 28, 1986, and also in classrooms via the NASA space agency’s TV channel.
