Is Carinthia demoting its cultural department? Scene protests and criticizes ÖVP

The cultural department of the state of Carinthia should actually present a cultural strategy soon. We worked on it for two and a half years – and, as everyone involved told STANDARD, it was “productive”. Instead, the news is now making waves that the country’s cultural department could be dissolved as an independent unit. It’s not fixed yet, but in the course of the ongoing handover from State Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) to State Councilor Daniel Fellner, several departments in the state have recently been at loggerheads. Culture could be next. The signals should become harder. Because: Fellner has already taken over the SPÖ party chairmanship and he also wants to sit in the state governor’s chair soon. But this requires a majority in the state parliament. And as observers from the cultural scene fear, coalition partner ÖVP could have their approval of Feller as the new state governor bought at a high price.
