Lula confirms trip to the USA and says that dialogue with Trump needs to be ‘eye to eye’

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Tuesday (27) that he intends to meet with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and emphasized that it is necessary to maintain a conversation “eye to eye” so that the relationship between the two countries returns to normal.

“Brazil and the United States are the two main democracies in the West. I think it is important for two heads of state to talk looking into each other’s eyes to discuss good relations”, said the president to the journalist in Panama City, where he will participate, this Wednesday (28), in the International Economic Forum Latin America and the Caribbean 2026, organized by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Brazilian president says he is convinced that normality between the two countries will return soon. “We are going to strengthen multilateralism, and we are going to make economies grow again because that is what the people expect from all of us”, he declared.

. According to the Brazilian president, he intends to hold the meeting at the beginning of March. “Whoever will find a solution for the people of Venezuela is the Venezuelan people themselves. It won’t be Brazil, it won’t be the United States,” he said. “We have to be patient and help the Venezuelan people take care of their destiny,” he added.

Upon his arrival, the Brazilian president also commented on the political situation in Venezuela. Adopting a cautious tone, he defended the country’s sovereignty and ruled out Brazil interfering in the region.

The last time Lula visited Panama was in May 2011, when, as a former president, he participated as a guest of then-governor Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014) in the inauguration of the second phase of the Panamanian capital’s seafront, known as Cinta Costera – one of the works by the Brazilian construction company investigated for bribes and overpricing.
