The Ministry of Justice and Public Security informed the Federal Supreme Court (STF) this Wednesday (28) that the Brazilian government formalized the request for extradition of former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) from the United States.

In the letter sent to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who requested the extradition, the ministry informed that the request was delivered by the Brazilian embassy in Washington to the State Department on December 30, 2025. There is no deadline for analyzing the extradition.

Former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) during Jair Bolsonaro’s government, Ramagem was sentenced to 16 years of prison in the criminal action of the coup plot.

In September last year, he fled the country to avoid serving his sentence and is living in Miami.

During the investigation into the coup plot, he was prohibited by the STF from leaving the country. According to the Federal Police, Ramagem fled across the border with Guyana and embarked for the United States with a diplomatic passport, which was not seized.

At the end of last year, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies declared the revocation of mandate of Ramagem. The Constitution determines that the House declares the loss of a parliamentarian’s mandate due to a criminal conviction.
