The genocide committed by the Nazis in Germany during the Second World War, between 1939 and 1945 of the last century, killed millions of Jewish people and people of other ethnicities, including gypsies and Poles, as well as homosexuals, people with disabilities and communists.
In the message, recalls that in 2004, in a meeting with Israel Singer, from the World Jewish Congress, he signed a petition addressed to the United Nations (UN) to officially establish the date, approved the following year. The choice of the date of January 27th refers to the day on which the atrocities of Auschwitz concentration campin Germany, were revealed. The year was 1945.
“A day to remember those who lost their lives and show solidarity with those millions of families destroyed and the suffering of an entire people. A day to defend Human Rights, peaceful coexistence and democratic institutions, fundamental elements of the fairer world that we want to leave for future generations”, stated the president.
