Samuel de Araújo Lima, who has been working for 35 years, failed to comply with the corporation’s dress code, according to PMPE; defense contests and claims that the style is the same as the military has always used
A sergeant from the Pernambuco Military Police was punished with three days of disciplinary detention for the size of his mustacheon January 13th. Second Sergeant Samuel de Araújo Lima, who has worked in the police for 35 years, was given the reason why his mustache extends past his lower lip. He is currently assigned to the Independent Tourist Support Company (CIATur).
According to the PM, the facial hair was at odds with the aesthetic standard, provided for in Sunor nº 068/2020, internal disciplinary regulations for police officers in Pernambuco.
The Military Police also states that the soldier was verbally warned before the three-day punishment. Samuel was not arrested, but was held in military installations.
The punishment is “non-compliance with internal rules that regulate the standards of personal presentation of state military personnel. The act precedes the reiteration of non-compliance, which in the case of the graduate was the target of verbal warnings for suitability, taking into account the soldier’s background”, says the PM.
The corporation also claims that the photos circulating in the press of the PM does not match the shape of the mustache was at the time of the punishment. The defense, through lawyer Tiago Oliveira Reis, disputes the version.
“It is worth noting that the photo circulating in the press does not match the presentation that generated the communication of non-compliance with internal rules, which can generate a false association and strangeness due to the punishment applied”, says the corporation.

The sergeant was received by the general commander of the PMPE, colonel Ivanildo Torres, for a gesture of bravery at the iprevent a robbery in the Campo Grande neighborhood. According to the defense, the mustache was the same one that earned Samuel the punishment. Tribute took place in September 2024.
The defense claims that if there was a reason for the punishment, it would have to have been applied on that date. Despite being different days, Thiago argues that the mustache is the same, and that it only marginally extends past the lower lip line, highlighting that the measurement is subjective.
The lawyer also explains that the punishment can be reviewed by the new commander, as he switched from the Tourist Policing Battalion to the 1st Battalion of the Military Police of Pernambuco.
