The three participated in an event held by the investment bank UBS at a hotel in the south of São Paulo. Caiado had announced his departure from and affiliation with the PSD the night before and addressed Faria Lima for the first time as a member of the party led by Kassab.
“I am here the freshman of this affiliation, of this party, and this issue, without a doubt, will be raised. We will seek, within the moment that we have the nominee to be the PSD candidate, this alliance. And we have a deadline until July 2026 and a space until the party conventions begin”, said Caiado.
“But you’re absolutely right, we’re going to look for all the parties. The MDB, the Republicans… I’ve also been trying to see if I can sensitize the PP people. But, in União Brasil, you see that it was a solution that everyone understood and even said that I have every prerogative to look for an alternative”, he added.
The trio was accompanied by the governor of Minas Gerais, (Novo). Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), whose presidential candidacy lost momentum after Jair Bolsonaro (PL) nominated senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) as a candidate, was not present.
Caiado already had differences with Kassab and, in 2015, during discussions involving the recreation of the PL, the governor of Goiás —who at the time was a senator— . When asked about the topic, he preferred to attack Lula.
“We are part of a party that has a very big concern, which is being able to show that it does not have any individual candidacy,” said the governor. “Whoever is nominated will have the support of others. Now, we are discussing a very serious problem, the 2026 election. It’s not just about winning the election, it’s about knowing how to govern the country in the face of this installed collapse of governability by Lula”, he added.
“Is it possible that, to this day, he [Lula] You say you’re going to fight hunger and you can’t? He’s been saying this for 40 years and still can’t do it today? Any of us can resolve this in two years in office,” said Caiado. “What we have to wait for now is Kassab, right? Caiado also said that he even spoke with Flávio Bolsonaro at the senator’s house. “We have detailed this matter [lançar candidaturas separadas]showing that a larger number [de candidatos] in the first round it provides the conditions to make the second round viable. A single candidacy in the first round is what Lula wants,” he said. “There is no disagreement with these center-right stances.”
Criticism of the Lula government were the points that attracted the most applause during the speech by the four pre-candidates. Zema reinforced the criticism when speaking to journalists.
“I have already publicly stated that I will support any of them [do PSD] and also Flávio in the second round against PT. We have to remember that our proposals in relation to those of the left are the proposals that will take Brazil into the future. Social programs are extremely important, but we need to have an exit door. It is not possible to live with this waste that makes investment in Brazil prohibited”, said the miner.
Secretary of the government in São Paulo, the president of the PSD has already stated that the party must have its own candidacy, if the senator maintains his name until the end of the electoral race.
