Jay Vine fractured his left wrist following an unusual incident during the last stage of the Tour Down Under, a race he would eventually win. The Australian UAE Emirates cyclist collided with a kangaroo that unexpectedly entered the road, just over 70 kilometers from the finish, causing him to fall out of the peloton.
Despite the scare and pain, Vine managed to complete the stage and secure victory in the general classification. It was only after the end of the race that the injury was fully diagnosed. As explained by the team’s clinical director, after medical examinations, a significant fracture in the scaphoid bone of the left wrist was detected.
The 30-year-old cyclist has already undergone surgery, in an intervention considered successful, but will be away from competition during the recovery and rehabilitation period. UAE Emirates did not provide a deadline for returning to the competition.
Jay Vine is one of the six runners chosen to join João Almeida’s support team at the Giro de Itália, which takes place between May 8 and 31, and his presence in the next races on the calendar is now in doubt.
Only in the Tour Down Under: Race leader Jay Vine and a few other of the world’s best cyclists have been taken down by a kangaroo after it hopped into the peloton.
