US plans CIA base in Venezuela

According to “CNN”, the intelligence agency leads efforts to influence the South American country after Maduro’s ouster

The government of President Donald Trump (Republican Party) is working to establish a CIA (United States intelligence agency) base in Venezuela, according to sources heard by North American this Tuesday (January 27, 2026).

The intelligence agency is leading efforts to influence the future of the Venezuelan country after the deposition of President Nicolás Maduro on January 3. The CIA and the US State Department are defining what the US presence will be like in Venezuelan territory.

According to the report, the United States intends to use the intelligence agency as an initial instrument in the re-entry process in the country, before establishing a formal diplomatic presence. On the day of Maduro’s capture, the newspaper The New York Times that the CIA had officers operating clandestinely within the government.

In the short term, US officials will be able to operate from a CIA annex before the official opening of the embassy. This will allow the establishment of informal contacts with different factions of the Venezuelan government and opposition figures.

After the operation in the country, Delcy Rodríguez, who was Maduro’s vice president, took command of Venezuela. On Sunday (25 January), she “no more orders from Washington”in reference to the capital of the United States. Previously, on January 16, Rodríguez met with CIA director John Ratcliffe to discuss cooperation between the countries.
