It’s hard to imagine the modern internet without Wikipedia. However, when the free online encyclopedia was launched the January 15, 2001critics were quick to dismiss it. Built entirely by volunteers and open to public editing, Wikipedia was widely seen as unreliable and many teachers banned students from citing it.
Now. At a time when online information is becoming increasingly difficult to decipher due to the abundance of content generated by artificial intelligence, human-curated resources how Wikipedia gains renewed importance and credibility.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the site stands out as one of the most visited and influential sources of online information. To mark the historic date, the Wikimedia Foundation shared a list of the 25 most viewed Wikipedia pages ever, based on data available since 2008.
At the top of the list is “List of deaths by year“, with more than 647 million views. Pages about countries such as the United States, India and the United Kingdom are also among the most viewed, as well as historical themes such as the Second World War and the First World War.
Public figures dominate much of the list. Politicians like Donald Trump and Barack Obama appear alongside cultural icons such as Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift and the Beatles. Sports stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are also highlighted, as are artists such as Dwayne Johnson, Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury.
