O YouTube announced that it will expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the age group of users and offer age-appropriate experiences, starting in Brazil, Singapore and Australia.
It has already been tested in markets such as the US and Europe, and now aims to ensure a safer experience for teenagers and children on the platform.
How will AI work without YouTube?
The AI will be responsible for analyzing various signals to infer a user’s age. This includes factors such as the types of videos searched, categories watched, and the longevity of the account. With this data, the system can determine whether the user is under 18 and automatically apply certain restrictions and protections.
Automatic protections for teenagers
When the system identifies that a user is a teenager, some measures will automatically be applied to protect their experience. This includes opting out of personalized advertising, enabling digital wellbeing tools, and limiting recommendations for content that is potentially inappropriate for this age group.
Verification for 18+
If the AI makes a mistake and classifies a user as under 18, they will have the option to verify their age by presenting a credit card or official document. Only users verified or inferred to be over 18 will be able to access restricted content, such as videos with specific age ratings.
Security and privacy objective
The main objective of this technology is to offer a safer and more personalized experience for users, especially younger ones, without compromising their privacy.
YouTube emphasizes that it will continue to invest in solutions that protect children, teenagers and families, ensuring that they can explore the platform in a safe and educational way.
