American singer and songwriter Bruce Springsteen released a new song on Wednesday titled Streets of Minneapolis (Ulice Minneapolisu), which he wrote in protest against the intervention of immigration authorities in the largest city of the state of Minnesota. In it, the seventy-six-year-old artist sings Fr “King Trump’s Private Army” and government lies. TASR informs about it based on the report of the AP agency.
“I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday (Tuesday) and am releasing it today in response to the state terror that hit the city of Minneapolis,” Springsteen said on Facebook. He dedicated the song “to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors, and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renée Good.”
The song has a slow tempo and Springsteen, nicknamed The Boss, is accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. “O our Minneapolis, I hear thy voice,” Springsteen sings. “You sing through the bloody fog/We’ll stand up for this country/And for the strangers in our midst,” the text continues. The song ends with the exclamation: „ICE Out! (Preč s ICE!)“ ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents shot and killed 37-year-old paramedic Alex Pretti during a crackdown on illegal immigrants in Minneapolis on Saturday. an American citizen who was allegedly armed and resisting arrest. On January 7, an ICE agent fatally shot Renée Good, an American woman of the same age, who allegedly wanted to hit him with a car.
The lyrics of the song describe the intervention of security forces in Minneapolis. Alluding to US President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policy, Springsteen sings about “King Trump’s private army” or “the vile lies of Miller and Noah”referring to Trump adviser Stephen Miller, who called Pretti a “murderer” while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused him of “domestic terrorism”.
The name of the latest composition recalls the title of the legendary song Streets of Philadelphia, which Springsteen composed for the film Philadelphia from 1993 and in the following years won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and four Grammy awards.
The White House also reacted to the release of the song. His spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told the Washington Post that “The Trump administration is focused on motivating Democrats at the state and local level to work with federal law enforcement agencies to rid communities of dangerous undocumented immigrants, not random songs with irrelevant opinions and inaccurate information.”
Springsteen has previously been critical of the current US government. At the time, Trump called him “a pushy, annoying jerk.” He also called Sprinsteen “dumb as a log” a “dried plum” s “completely atrophied” skin and urged him to “kept his mouth shut”.
Minneapolis is one of the largest so-called sanctuary cities (Sanctuary Cities), which are cities or municipalities that purposefully limit or refuse to cooperate with the federal government in enforcing immigration legislation. Minnesota has the largest number of Somali immigrants and American citizens of Somali descent in the US. Minneapolis and Minnesota are run by politicians from the ranks of opposition Democrats.
