More than 20 OSCE countries launch an expert mission for human rights in Georgia: They activated the Moscow Mechanism

Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic and 20 other member countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) announced on Thursday, that they will establish an expert mission to deal with the deteriorating human rights situation in Georgia. TASR informs about it according to a Reuters report.

The countries stated in a joint statement that they will take this step based on the activation of the so-called of the Moscow Mechanism for the Investigation of Human Rights. Its activation is a response to “growing human rights concerns”. It was preceded by the activation of the so-called of the Vienna Mechanism in December 2024 in order to express concern about the development of the situation in Georgia and to request more information from the local authorities.

“Georgia, as an OSCE member state, is committed to respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms…However, our concerns regarding the implementation of joint and international human rights obligations by the Georgian authorities have only increased,” the countries said in a joint statement published on the British government’s website.

It called for an investigation into the observance of human rights in Georgia Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Sweden.
