Netherlands: Agreement on three-party minority government under Yeeten

Ολλανδία: Συμφωνία για τρικομματική κυβέρνηση μειοψηφίας υπό τον Γιέτεν

An agreement on the formation was reached by the leaders of the Democrats 66 (D66), the Christian Democrats and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in , just three months after the elections in which the liberal party D66 emerged as the winner. According to what was announced, the three parties agreed on the creation of a minority government, which will control 66 of the 150 seats in the Parliament and which will probably have Rob Yetten as prime minister.

“We’re incredibly excited to get started,” Yetten, 38, said in announcing the deal on Tuesday night. “We will govern as a three-member coalition, but we would also like to work with other parties.”

Minority government “for the eyes” of Yesilgioz

The new government is expected to be officially sworn in by mid-February, after which due to the balance in Parliament it will be forced to work with opposition parties to pass the legislation. In addition, it lacks a majority in the Senate, which can block laws passed by the House.

The three parties made the highly unusual choice to govern without a majority after VVD leader Dylan Yesilgioz refused from the outset to consider working with the left-wing GroenLinks/PvdA alliance, which won 20 seats, calling it “too radical”.
