Ratinho Jr. defends freeing Bolsonaro and exposes split in PSD – 01/29/2026 – Politics

The governor of Paraná, defended this Wednesday (29) a pardon for the former president, sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for leading a coup plot, and for those convicted of participating in the attacks on January 8, 2023.

Alongside the governors (Goiás) and (Rio Grande do Sul), Ratinho is one of the names who could run for President next year.

“These vandals, who made a mistake, must be treated as criminals for a crime of vandalism. But, if it is necessary to pacify the country, it is necessary to do so”, said the governor in .

Ratinho stated that the punishment was excessive and compared the attack to invasions by PT members of the Legislative Assembly of Paraná.

Leaders are divided on the issue. Caiado, who joined the party this week, has already stated on several occasions that he is in favor of a broad and unrestricted amnesty, which would also benefit Bolsonaro.

Leite, on the other hand, has already said that he is against amnesty, considering it “bad for the country”. In an interview with CNN in March last year, he admitted to those who were not involved in planning a coup d’état.

Kassab stated in a note, in September, one day after Bolsonaro’s conviction, his position and “his solidarity with the former president”.

Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and the state, one of the main leaders of the party, which is often the target of attacks by Bolsonarists, has already taken a stand against the amnesty.

“We cannot clap for the Court when it is in our favor and want to annul the Court’s decisions when it is against us. In fact, one of the premises of the democratic system is to respect judicial decisions”, he told CNN in April 2025.

PSD deputies and senators were divided in the votes on , a proposal that reduces the sentences of those convicted of January 8th and benefits Bolsonaro.

The bill was approved in the House and Senate, but by . The veto can still be overturned by Congress and, in this case, brought to justice.

Governor of São Paulo and ally of Bolsonaro, he is another name mentioned by Planalto, who has already promised that he would grant him a pardon if he were elected president. Under pressure to express more emphatic support for the senator’s pre-candidacy, Tarcísio says he will seek re-election.

Even if a right-wing candidate were elected president and granted a pardon to Bolsonaro, the measure could still be overturned by the Federal Supreme Court. There is precedent: in May 2023, the STF granted by the former president to the former federal deputy, due to misuse of purpose.
