Roof of the bus station in Leiria collapsed and damaged dozens of vehicles

From Monday, the cecentral bus station can operate next to the Leiria stadiumprovisionally. The terminal operates the city’s urban services and the intercity services of the intercity community, as well as Rede Expresso and Flixbus.

Around 45 vehicles were damaged when the roof of the Leiria bus terminal collapsed, the director of the Lis Bus Station said this Thursday, during the visit to the site by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.

According to Paulo Carvalho, during the early hours of Wednesday there were “around 15 to 16 vehicles at the terminal. The structure completely gave way, suffocating the vehicles. We have this completely wrapped up. We also have around 30 vehicles from our workshops that were also completely decimated”, he specified.

The person in charge explained that the service is being provided outside the building, where passengers enter and exit.

However, Leiria City Council is setting up a tent so that, from Monday onwards, the cecentral bus station can operate next to the Leiria stadiumprovisionally.

The bus terminal operates the city’s urban services and the intercity services of the intercity community, as well as Rede Expresso and Flixbus.

“We have around 90% of operations here,” added Paulo Carvalho.

Schools closed

The president of the Chamber of Leiria, Gonçalo Lopes, told the prime minister that the schools in the municipality are on academic breakand it is not yet defined when they will resume activity — “tomorrow [sexta-feira] we make the decision whether to open or not” on Monday, he said.

The mayor admitted, however, that the probability of many schools opening that day “is slim”.

“We also need school transport and we won’t be able to operate it,” he said.

Paulo Carvalho revealed that “efforts are being made to find vehicles in other companies in the group to bring here temporarily, while they are not repaired”, he explained.

“Now the main thing is to try to remove this damaged structure and safely start repairing the vehicles”, concluded Paulo Carvalho.
