At first it was just rumors from rather dizzying social media accounts: Another high-ranking general in the Chinese army had been fired. Propaganda, fake news, counter-propaganda – various nonsense circulates online every day, and not just about China. But after days of guesswork, the Chinese Ministry of Defense confirmed the rumors: the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), Zhang Youxia, is being investigated for “serious disciplinary offenses.” Another ZMK member, Liu Zhenli, is also being investigated, it was reported last weekend.
