How the prospect of 22 pints of wine brings you to your first marathon

To start with the health tip that a running coach gave me for the marathon: At kilometer three you don’t have to worry about dehydration. So at the Marathon du Médoc in September 2025 I walked very confidently past the first watering hole. That was really stupid of me, as it later turned out. Right at the start of the competition, the Château Lynch-Bages winery is giving away one of its best wines to athletes for free, a Grand Cru Classé, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite typical for this French wine-growing region near Bordeaux, I probably should have tried it better. Alcohol dehydrates you, but not at mile three, that’s what the coach said… Or did I misunderstand him?
