Life expectancy in USA rose to 79 years in 2024, the highest mark in the country’s history. Preliminary information shows that the positive trajectory continued last year. The end of the covid-19 pandemic and the reduction in mortality rates from heart disease, cancer and drug overdoses, among other conditions, are the main factors for the improvement of the indicator. The data was published this Thursday (29) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

For decades, life expectancy increased steadily in the United States and peaked in 2014, close to 79 years. The situation remained stable until the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the indicator fell to less than 76 and a half years, in 2021. Since then, the number has recovered.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but cases have fallen by about 3% for the second year in a row.
