How long we live varies from person to person – and depending on place and time. In 1850, the average life expectancy was only around 30 to 35 years. However, this extremely low value is deceptive as it was heavily influenced by massive infant and child mortality. At that time, almost half of the children died before the age of ten. Today, the average life expectancy of men born in Austria is around 80 years and of women around 84 years.
