The UN faces a crisis: Lack of funding threatens missions and staff

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres warned on Friday, that the organization is on the verge of financial collapse and called on countries to pay their contributions. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

“Either all member states meet their obligations and pay in full and on time, or they must fundamentally rethink our financial rules to avoid imminent financial collapse.” wrote the Secretary General in a letter.

The administration of US President Donald Trump in recent months reduced the funding of some UN agencies and refused or delayed some mandatory contributions.

“Decisions to default on mandatory contributions, which finance a significant portion of the approved budget, have now been formally announced,” Guterres continued. “The current development is unsustainable. It exposes the organization to structural financial risk,” pointed out the Secretary General.

AFP explains that the UN has been facing major problems for years, as some member states do not pay their mandatory contributions in full, while others do not pay them on time. As a result, the organization cannot recruit new employees and limits its missions.
