Today, children receive six-month report cards, the police warn: Grades must not be a reason for…

  • The half-year report period can mean increased stress and anxiety for children.
  • Police warn that signs are not a reason to run or hide.
  • Children should not be afraid to talk about their feelings or problems.
  • Children can seek help from trusted adults or the police.

Assessment periods can be particularly difficult for some children at school. Fear of punishment, yelling or disappointing adults can lead to rash decisions such as running away from home, hiding or keeping quiet about problems. TASR was informed about this by the spokesperson of the Presidium of the Police Force, Lea Vilhanová.

“If the results aren’t as expected, it doesn’t mean failure. It just means something was difficult or didn’t work out. And that happens to everyone, even adults.” said Vilhanová.

The police say that the grades must not be the reason for which the child runs away from his home, experiences strong fear, sadness or the feeling that he can’t handle it anymore. If the child is worried about the parents’ reaction, according to the police, it is important not to be silent about it. He can find help from a teacher, school psychologist, grandparents or another adult he trusts. “He can also find help here – at the police,” the spokeswoman noted.

The police officers stated that they do not only deal with misdemeanors and crimes, but also deal with the protection of children and their safety. “Every child has the right to feel safe at home, at school and in their emotions,” they said.

According to the police, the six-month report card is feedback, not a final verdict. She explained that the most important thing that children need today is not yelling or punishment, but a feeling of acceptance and support. “Kids, if you feel like it’s too much for you – you’re not alone. Talking about problems is a sign of courage, not weakness.” added Vilhanová.
