Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic three sets to 1 and won the Australia Open for the first time. With the victory in Melbourne this Sunday (1st), the 22-year-old Spaniard became the youngest player in history to be champion of four Grand Slams, the biggest tournaments of the season.
The previous record was held by his compatriot Rafael Nadal. When he won the US Open in 2010, at the age of 24, he was until then the youngest tennis player to complete the sport’s biggest tournaments. Nadal, in fact, was present at the final at Rod Laver Arena, in Melbourne, and was revered by Alcaraz. “It’s a privilege to have you watching my match,” said the champion.
The final this Sunday lasted three hours and two minutes and started with the Serbian closing the first set 6-2. Afterwards, Alcaraz, number 1 in the world, returned the score and tied the match.
In the third set, the game became more competitive. At 38 years old, Djoko was more physically worn out and was beaten by the Spaniard 3-6.
The fourth and final set was the most balanced. The Serb staged a comeback and had a chance to break Alcaraz’s serve, but lost the set and the match 7-5.
Alcaraz had already won the other three Grand Slams twice: Roland Garros (2023 and 2025), Wimbledon (2023 and 2024) and US Open (2022 and 2025).
In his speech after winning the Australian Open, the Spaniard thanked him for the work done together with his team and also stated that Djoko has been an inspiration for him.
The Serb is the biggest champion of the Australian tournament. He lifted the trophy ten times and had never lost a final in Melbourne.
The Serbian highlighted the feat achieved by Alacaraz and said that the best way to describe the tennis player is as “historic and legendary”.
