This is what a resident of the Caeté River region shows, who recorded on video the backyard of his residence taken by water. The images show the flooding of the area where the family maintained small plantations, compromising subsistence production and the residents’ main source of food. With the rise in river levels, farmers report frequent losses, such as the loss of fields, vegetable gardens and even domestic animals, such as chickens and pigs.

The situation becomes even more serious due to the distance of the communities from the municipality’s headquarters. Difficult access and logistical challenges make it difficult for public authorities to receive humanitarian aid, social assistance and emergency actions. During periods of flood, movement depends almost exclusively on boats, which limits quick assistance to affected families.

Residents of rural areas are asking for greater attention from the authorities, especially in increasing assistance during the Amazon winter period, when floods become recurrent. They highlight the need for support with basic food baskets, animal rescue, as well as preventive policies that minimize the impacts of flooding.

While river levels remain high, riverside families in Sena Madureira continue to live with insecurity, losses and uncertainty about when the situation will return to normal.
