Chamber approves basic text of the People’s Gas MP

The Chamber of Deputies approved this Monday the provisional measure that creates the People’s Gas Program, which provides for free refilling of 13kg LPG cylinders at accredited resellers for families registered in the Single Registry (CadÚnico).

The program should reach more than 15 million families, according to the government, registered in CadÚnico with a per capita monthly family income equal to or less than half the minimum wage.

The basic text of the proposal was approved early in the evening by an overwhelming majority – 415 votes in favor and 29 against –, given the popularity of the topic and the proximity of the election period, in October.

Chamber approves basic text of the People’s Gas MP

Shortly after the approval of the base text, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, used his profile on X to celebrate the approval and state that the Chamber took “a historic step” by approving the People’s Gas MP.

“A Brazilian government program, which expands access to cooking gas, guarantees dignity and concretely combats energy poverty”, published the minister.

“Up to 50 million people will benefit, around 15.5 million homes, consolidating the largest program to combat energy poverty in the world,” he added.

During the vote, the measure received little resistance, but there were those who opposed parts of it. Representative Luiz Lima (Novo-RJ), for example, was one of them.

“The Novo Party… is in favor of Brazilians receiving gas aid in the way they already receive it. But the government wants to create accredited resellers so that Brazilians, instead of receiving the money, go to these accredited resellers and collect a cylinder”, he stated, criticizing the way the cylinders are distributed.

Representative Hildo Rocha (MDB-MA) explained, however, that the benefits of the program that subsidizes the purchase of 50% of gas will be maintained.

“The financial aid has not ended, it continues… The difference is that the financial aid corresponds to only half the value, while the replacement of the gas cylinder is completely free, it is 100%. There is just this difference”, he explained.

Edited in September last year, the MP now goes to the Senate. It risks losing its validity if it is not voted on by the Senate by February 11th.
