Commentator José Eduardo Cardozo and political scientist Magno Karl discussed, this Monday (2), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 11pm), if, in a speech, the president of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Edson Fachin, admitted a crisis in the Court’s image.

At the opening ceremony of the Judiciary year, he asked for transparency in the face of doubts about conflicts of interest.

Cardozo believes that society’s demands are natural and can be resolved.

“It’s very difficult for you to talk about self-control with a certain standard of safety and predictability if I don’t have written containment rules, if everything depends on the idea of a magistrate’s subjectivism. A magistrate can say that he is absolutely right while society sees it as wrong. It won’t matter if the minister thinks it is right or wrong, what matters is what is in the Code of Ethics”, he said.

“Brazil is slow to adopt a Code of Ethics, Minister Fachin is correct”, he continued.

Magno understands that Fachin gave the messages he needed to give.

“In recent weeks, Minister Fachin has been speaking, even a little out of character, he is not a minister who gives many interviews, about the need for the Code of Conduct, about the responsibility of Supreme Court ministers and he spoke again on this topic today”, he argued.

“Minister Fachin does not need to be absolutely explicit, anyone who has been following the debate in recent months knows exactly what the messages given by the minister were, not only for those who sit on the Supreme Court with him, but mainly for Brazilian society”, he continued.
