The Cuban Department of Diplomacy confirmed the mutual communication, but emphasizes that it is not yet possible to talk about a formal dialogue.

TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

  • Cuba is communicating with President Trump’s administration.
  • Formal negotiations on an agreement with the USA are not yet underway.
  • Trump expects to conclude an agreement with the Cuban government.

Communication between Cuba and the US

“Today we cannot talk about dialogue with the United States, but it is true that there is communication between the two governments,” Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandéz de Cossio said in an interview with AFP.

Trump said on Sunday that the United States was negotiating with “people at the highest levels” of communist Cuba and that he expected to reach an agreement with the Cuban leadership. However, he did not give details of a possible deal. De Cossio reiterated that Cuba is “open to dialogue” with the US.

US pressure

The head of the White House has been putting pressure on Cuba to make a deal with the United States since US special forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3. Until then, Caracas had been Havana’s main ally and important financial supporter.

Trump said on Monday that Mexico would also “stop sending oil” to Cuba as he threatened to impose tariffs on countries circumventing his de facto blockade. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned of the humanitarian consequences of this move.
