Russia is prepared for the new reality of a world without limits on nuclear weapons control after the expiration of the New START treaty at the end of this week, the Russian arms control spokesman said on Tuesday (3).
Unless Moscow and Washington reach a last-minute bilateral understanding, the agreement between US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will expire on February 5.
“The lack of response is also a response,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by state news agency TASS in Beijing, regarding the lack of a response from Washington to Russian proposals to extend the limits of the deal.
Russia is prepared for the new reality where the world’s two largest nuclear powers, Ryabkov said. He also stated that Russia supports China’s stance on arms control.
On Iran, he said that the United States’ proposals to Iran amount to ultimatums.
According to him, if the US installed many anti-missile defense systems in Greenland, Russia would have to take compensatory measures in its military sphere.
