Harvard is accused by Trump administration officials of promoting so-called ‘woke’ ideology

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on Monday (2) that his government wants a compensation of US$ 1 billion (R$5.2 billion) from Harvard, after the newspaper The New York Times reported that the university had obtained concessions in the negotiations it maintains with the government.

“We are now seeking $1 billion in compensation and in the future we want nothing to do with Harvard University,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump administration officials have accused Harvard and other universities of promoting so-called ideology “woke” and not sufficiently protect Jewish students during pro-Palestine demonstrations, filing legal complaints and demanding exorbitant payments.

Critics pointed to a government pressure campaign on liberal universities.

O NOW reported on Monday that Trump had withdrawn his administration’s demands for a $200 million (R$1.05 billion) payment from Harvard, after prolonged negotiations.

Trump told journalists in September that negotiations were close to reaching a US$500 million (R$2.6 billion reais) agreement with Harvard, which would include, as part of the negotiation, the opening of professional schools.

“They wanted a complex job training concept, but the proposal was rejected as completely inadequate and, in our opinion, ineffective,” Trump said in the message published Monday night.
