WHO wants to receive US$ billion in 2026 to respond to 36 emergencies around the world

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched its global call for 2026 and mentioned that it seeks almost US$ 1 billion this year to respond to 36 emergencies around the worldincluding 14 Grade 3 emergencies, which require the highest level of organizational response, according to a statement published this Tuesday (3).

According to the agency, emergencies cover humanitarian crises sudden and prolonged, where health needs are critical, and the appeal comes at a time of “converging global pressures”, seeking to ensure that millions of people living in humanitarian crises and conflicts have access to health care.

According to the WHO, the organization’s and its partners’ emergency response actions include keeping essential health facilities operational, providing emergency medical supplies and care to victims of trauma, preventing and responding to outbreaks, restoring routine immunization, and ensuring access to sexual and reproductive, maternal and child health services in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.

“Prolonged conflicts, the growing impacts of climate change and recurring outbreaks of infectious diseases are driving increasing demand for health emergency support, while global humanitarian funding continues to decline,” explains the note.

In a speech on Tuesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus argued that global defense spending now exceeds US$2.5 trillion a year, while funding for humanitarian aid and health is recording the biggest drop in a decade. “The result is an ever-widening gap between the population’s needs and the system’s ability to provide resources,” he said.
