An era is coming to an end in the Czech Republic: The last cart with black coal was taken out of the mine in Stonava

From the ČSM mine in Stonava, in the east of the country, on Wednesday, the last cart with coal was symbolically brought to the surface from a depth of 1,300 meters. The official farewell ceremony was attended by many invited guests. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.

State mining company OKD said that mining ceased to be economically profitable due to high costs. OKD CEO Roman Sikora expressed his respect for generations of miners. In the industrial region of Silesia, heavily influenced by mining, the closure of the mine marks the end of an era. Approximately 700 employees will still be engaged in work related to the closure of the mine. Others will be offered the possibility of retraining.
