He Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has published a report on the evolution of the Ukrainian war. One of the main conclusions is that The Russian army’s advances are the slowest seen in more than 100 years of modern warfare.
Specifically, the CSIS, which has its headquarters in Washington (USA), has detailed that the troops of the country chaired by They have only advanced between 15 and 70 meters per day in their main offensives since the beginning of 2024.
These figures represent a pace of advance “slower than almost any major offensive campaign in any war of the last century”according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in its report.
The document points out, with reference to , that “his army has performed poorlywith historically slow rates of progress and little new territory to show for their efforts over the past two years.”
1.2 million Russian casualties since the start of the Ukrainian war
Furthermore, these limited advances are coming at the cost of a large number of casualties (dead, wounded and missing) in Russian forces. “Since February 2022, Russian forces have suffered nearly 1.2 million casualties, more casualties than any other major power in any war since World War II,” underlines CSIS.
In this sense, the report states that The Russian army has suffered “up to 325,000 deaths since February 2022”. In this regard, CSIS highlights that “no great power has suffered such a high number of casualties or deaths in any war since World War II.”
In total terms, the Center for Strategic and International Studies warns that “at the current rate, “Combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties could reach 2 million by spring 2026.”
On the other hand, CSIS also indicates that the war in Ukraine is causing serious economic problems in Russia. “Russia’s war economy is under increasing pressurewith the manufacturing industry in decline, a growth slowdown of 0.6% in 2025 and the absence of globally competitive technology companies that drive long-term productivity,” the report states.
