Hungary scored the biggest defeat in World Cup history

In 1982, in Spain, Hungary massacred the weak El Salvador team 10-1. The rout is, to this day, the most extensive in the history of the World Cup, since 1930. The two teams were in Group C, alongside Belgium and Argentina. On June 15th, in Elche, in the first round, the Hungarians honored the history of the fantastic generation of the fifties who used to beat their opponents by big scores. Nyilasi (two), Pölöskei, Tóth, Fazekas (two), Kiss (three) and Szentes found the net. The first half ended 3-0 for the Hungarians. In the next round, Hungary lost to Argentina, 4-1, and then drew with Belgium, 1-1, and was left out of the second phase of the World Cup.

The match with the highest number of goals in a World Cup was recorded in 1954, in Switzerland. The home team faced Austria in the quarter-finals, and was eliminated.

Austria 7×5 Switzerland: in Lausanne, at La Pontaise Stadium, Austria beat Switzerland, the hosts, by a spectacular score: 7 to 5! The game still holds the record for goals in a World Cup match to this day. The Swiss took a 3-0 lead, but Austria came back in sensational fashion and were already up 5-3 in the first half. The Austrians dominated the final stage, confirming their victory and classification.

In the semi-final, the Austrian team lost to Germany, 6-1, and did not reach the final. However, in the dispute for third place, they beat Uruguay, 3 to 1, and finished in third place.
