Luís Montenegro and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa were together this Tuesday, to talk about the consequences of the bad weather in Portugal over the last few days.
In a statement to journalists, at the Belém Palace, the prime minister warned that, from the point of view of meteorological developments, the country is “facing a week that presents a great challenge”.
Montenegro announced that it will meet again with the President of the Republic next Thursday to analyze the country’s situation at that time, highlighting that the next few days present “great challenges” in terms of weather conditions.
“For this very reason, I agreed with the President of the Republic to return here [Palácio de Belém] next Thursday – a day that is also expected to be difficult – so that we can assess the incidences precisely on that occasion”.
The Prime Minister explained that a forecast will be made even closer to the weekend and drew attention to a specific day – the day of the presidential elections: “In particular Sunday, which is a day on which it is also predictable, from a rain point of view, that there may be problems in terms of floods or flooding.“, declared the executive leader.
After this audience with the Prime Minister, the head of state went to the funeral of filmmaker João Canijo and then to areas affected by the storms, starting with the municipality of Ourém.
10 people have died since last week following bad weather. Civil Protection recorded five deaths directly associated with the passage of the Kristin depression and the Câmara da Marinha Grande announced another fatality, to which were added four deaths recorded due to falls from roofs (during repairs) or poisoning originating from a generator.
